Google’s upcoming plans reveal the integration of dashcam functionality in Pixel and potentially other supported Android devices, as disclosed by the company.
Google has inadvertently revealed its intention to incorporate a dashcam feature into Pixel smartphones and potentially extend it to other supported Android devices through the Personal Safety app.
9to5Google reports that “Google’s dashcam feature came to light with the accidental release of a dogfood build of the app, which is intended for internal use within Google but occasionally becomes publicly accessible. The feature has now been fully exposed and comprehensively detailed”.
A Powerful Dashcam Experience
Enabling the new dashcam feature will turn your supported Android device into a highly capable dashcam.
It is noteworthy as modern smartphones boast far more advanced technology than conventional dashcams like cellular connectivity, GPS functionality, a wide array of sensors, and high-quality video and audio recording components.

Customizable Settings
The customizable option allows the users to toggle audio recording, enable automatic recording upon Bluetooth connection to a car, and manage storage allocations.
Efficient Video Compression and Automatic Deletion
The dashcam feature automatically compressed the videos, with each minute of recording occupying approximately 30MB of storage. Additionally, the feature incorporates an automatic deletion process, removing videos from the device after three days.
Availability and Expectations
Given the feature’s extensive development, it is reasonable to expect that Google will choose the June Feature Drop for Pixel phones to release the dashcam feature. The feature’s documentation doesn’t explicitly mention exclusivity to Pixel phones, leaving room for the possibility of wider Android devices.
Ideally, this dashcam functionality shouldn’t be exclusive to a specific brand of Android phone, as safety concerns should encompass all users, regardless of their device’s brand.
